In a successful test, a Korean cathode manufacturer used RecycLiCo Battery Materials Inc.’s AMYZF recycled-upcycled precursor cathode active material to create battery cells. RecycLiCo’s NMC811 precursor comprising nickel, manganese, and cobalt oxide outperformed other recycled cathode precursor materials. Additionally, RecycLiCo’s product performed at the same level as existing commercial NMC811 precursor material.
The battery cell performance test was validated by industry-standard metrics. RecycLiCo’s precursor was produced using battery product scrap and black mass samples. The success of this test provides validation for the company’s novel closed-loop recycling technology. This is a significant milestone for the company, proving the efficacy of recycled lithium-ion batteries.
“These results not only validate our technological lead but also showcase the potential of our strategic business model that enables potential cathode and battery manufacturer partners to reintegrate recycled battery-ready materials while gaining economic and environmental benefits,” commented Zarko Meseldzija, CEO and Director of RecycLiCo Battery Materials Inc. “We are excited to explore potential partnership opportunities and further advance technical due diligence with the Korean manufacturer as we push the boundaries of sustainability and innovation in the battery materials industry.”
Recycled Batteries Are Key To A Future-Ready Circular Economy
The majority of batteries are made from a lithium-ion chemical formula. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) differ in construction; some LIBs have nickel, manganese, and cobalt in them, while others use iron phosphate as a primary metal. However, it is inevitable that all batteries will need to be recycled and the raw materials that are used to create the batteries are finite.
A circular economy is one where existing products are recycled and reused to decrease waste and provide a sustainable source of materials. A circular economy not only benefits the environment by limiting single-use products and over-extraction of valuable materials, but a circular economy can also benefit industries and supply chains. Companies can be more integrated and resource independent.
RecycLiCo Battery Materials Inc. is one of the companies pioneering recycling technology. RecycLiCo is a battery materials company focused on recycling and upcycling lithium-ion batteries. It has created a patented, closed-loop hydrometallurgical process that can capture up to 100% extraction of lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese used in LIBs and integrate the materials into the remanufacturing of new LIBs.
Companies like RecycLiCo are instrumental in the circular economy and the future of battery production.
